Prediction Market Regulation by Country
Derivatives rules, gambling licences and geoblocking, country by country.
Whether you can legally use a prediction market depends less on the platform than on the letter you would get from your own regulator. The same product can be a licensed financial instrument, a gambling product, or illegal โ in three neighbouring countries.
Three regulatory treatments
- As a derivative. Event contracts are supervised by a financial regulator, listed on a designated exchange with published contract specifications, segregated client funds and reporting obligations. This is how several large venues operate.
- As gambling. The venue holds a betting or exchange licence from a gambling commission, pays gambling duty, and must apply local rules on advertising, age limits and responsible play.
- Unlicensed. Offshore and on-chain venues operating with no local authorisation, usually geoblocking the countries that would object.
What changes for you
Regulation determines whether client money is segregated, whether there is a complaints body, whether the venue can be forced to honour a resolution, how winnings are treated for tax, and whether you can use the platform without breaking local law. It also explains why a market open to one trader is a "restricted" badge for another.

How restriction is enforced
Most venues geoblock by IP, ask for proof of residence at verification, and restrict the payment methods available in a country. Some allow existing users to close positions but not open new ones โ the "close only" status you will see on our brand pages. Attempting to evade a block typically voids your account terms, and funds can be frozen at withdrawal even if trading worked fine.
The categories that attract the most attention
Political event contracts and sports event contracts. Both have been the subject of regulatory action, court cases and rule changes in several major markets recently. A venue may keep its economics and crypto markets open in a country while blocking politics and sport specifically, so check availability at category level as well as brand level.
KYC and age
Licensed venues verify identity and address before withdrawal, apply an age floor of 18 or 21, and may run source-of-funds checks above thresholds. On-chain venues frequently ask for none of this, which is convenient until you need somebody to be accountable.

How to check your own position
- Set your country on this site; every brand page then shows Available, Restricted, Close only or Unknown for you.
- Read the country guide for the licensing regime and payment norms where you live.
- Confirm on the platform's own terms before depositing โ our data is reviewed regularly but rules change.
- If tax treatment matters to you, take local advice: gambling winnings and derivatives gains are often taxed very differently.
This is general information about how the industry is regulated, not legal advice.
